Tell the world your story

Penning your future after a graduate degree in journalism can be overwhelming due to the wealth of options ahead of you. In some cases, even age has its deadlines and would need you to act before it is too late. When youth is still by your side, make sure you make the most of it. Besides, catching up with the latest news can require you to be on your heels. So, are you also ready to tell the world your story now?

Industry choices

Even if you have specialized in journalism, you can work in most of the industries that are related to mass communication. Some of the industry choices in front of you are:

Newspaper

Advertizing

Public Relations

Music industry

Education

Government

People nowadays prefer to work from home. On the other hand, some people want to work in the government sector since the career growth and remunerations are simply the best in it. Others wish to work at exotic foreign locales due to their passion for travel that can broaden the horizons of the mind.

The roles

Graduating from journalism class can let you decide on one of the following career paths you might wish to take:

Public relations officer

Fashion journalist

Photojournalist

Columnist

News analyst

Critic

Freelance writer

Sound mixer

Sound technician

Radio jockey

Art director

Film director

Screenwriter

Television correspondent

Presenter

Illustrator

Cartoonist

Editor

Proofreader

Assistant professor

Specializations in a journalism degree course can range from the principles of journalism to mass communications. Even if you decide to become a legal consultant for media companies at a later date, your course will enable a career in media law consultancy.

Prerequisites

Picking up journalistic skills is no rocket science. On the other hand, it is always a plus point if you already possess skills related to the field. A few other inputs required from your side would be hard work and dedication.

Career choices

A lot can be achieved with an accredited graduate degree in journalism. Most graduates go on to become media advocates, public relations officials, researchers, and more. Yes. It all depends entirely on your decision! Talk to your college counselor to assist you with the promised placement in the media industry. It also pays to prepare your personal portfolio along with a well drafted resume that showcases your talent.

In some cases, a lucky break is all you would need. So, start somewhere. Network with a few top professionals from the industry by expressing your interest to work with them on certain projects.

Earning potential

Any which way you see it; you would be working for a good cause. So, why not begin by volunteering for a newspaper agency? Not only would you gain some much needed experience in the industry, but you would also possibly get noticed someday for your splendid work. Journalists who start out on their careers can earn around ₹12,000 to ₹16,000 per month, on an average. Make sure you do not rule out the possibility of salaries shooting up in the future depending on talent crunches in the industry in the near future!

This is a total myth. Students pursuing Arts in 10+2 have interesting job opportunities in the market. All you need is a zeal to attain the skills and perseverance to take up higher studies or specialize in a specific domain.

Let us look at some of the job-oriented courses that can be pursued after completing your 12th boards in Arts.

BA– Bachelor of Arts or BA is one of the traditional graduation programs which many Arts students like to take up. Some of the advantages are – it is an easy-to-do program with not-so-tough syllabus and readily available colleges and seats. The other big advantage is for those who are targeting government jobs. Since the minimum requirement for most of the government jobs is graduation, many pursue it along with preparing for the entrance exams of govt. jobs. For BA graduates there are jobs in several government departments such as the Armed Forces, Administrative Offices, Railways, Banks, Civil Service, Schools etc. Depending on your specialization, you can also take up jobs in the private sectors as Managers, Administrators etc. However, going in for a Master’s program will help you hone your skills and enhance your market value.

BFA– Bachelor of Fine Arts or BFA is a 3-year professional course. This course involves the study of all forms of visual arts. Some of the specialized areas of this program include Sculpting, Painting, Dance, Music, Photography etc. If you have a creative side to yourself and want to develop your skills in that, this course is perfect for you. Skills and creativity are a must to thrive and succeed in this field. After completing this course, you can get jobs in the schools, fine arts institutes or work as a freelancer.

Mass Communication and Journalism – This is a highly promising and ‘in demand’ program. The media sector has witnessed immense growth in the last few years; both traditional media like TV and print as well as online media have huge scope for talented and passionate professionals. There are 3 different courses available – Degree which is a 3 year course and Diploma and Certificate courses ranging between 1 to 2 years. If you feel compelled by social activism or journalism, you will definitely establish yourself in this sector. Having communication skills is a complementary benefit for pursuing this course. After successful completion of this course, you can find jobs with the media houses. An entire gamut of vacancies has been created with the emerging online brands of media.

Event Management– After completing one’s 12th boards successfully, one can easily pursue a Degree course in Event management for a duration of 3 years or opt for a diploma or certificate course in this subject. One can also go for an MBA in Event Management. This field is dynamic and if you have managerial skills and strong connections and enjoy multi-tasking, this course is perfectly suited for you. Events are being organized at all times and their genre also varies – from sports to cultural to social, corporate and so on. The demand for organizing such events is so high, that there are event companies for such programs and as such, there is no dearth of jobs for the deserving ones.
